"Self Control" is a single which indicates a growing departure from Modern Wolf's new wave sound, bringing out the darker elements of the band's moods and lyrics, transporting them into deep atmospheric and danceable beats. While the single can be considered an EP, because it contains Radio Edit and Instrumental versions of the song, it is the original version that most balances the sonic beauty with the darkness.
lyrics
SELF CONTROL
I didn't want this,
need to get my act together,
walk to the store,
get my coffee black,
and wait for warmer weather.
Thought I needed this,
something to stop the rain,
I left the morgue,
put my blood back,
And received dead letters.
The times have really brought me back,
right in front of my face,
so close,
just to take it all away.
The times have really brought me back,
right in front of my face,
so close,
just to take it all away.
I didn't want this,
to show you that I cared.
but I pulled the ripcord,
(and) tried to laugh,
now (I'm) pulling dirt out of my hair.
I really wanted this,
something to break the pain,
but, back in the morgue,
needle in my neck,
and I don't plan on going nowhere.
The times have really brought me back,
right in front of my face,
so close,
just to take it all away.
Got me out of bed,
for another hoax, for another hoax,
and I wish I could make it go away.
Hope takes me where it wants to go,
every time I open up that door.
Chain-smoke with a lump stuck in my throat,
hope takes away my self-control.
Hope takes me where it wants to go,
all the times I've opened up that door.
Chain-smoke with a lump stuck in my throat,
hope takes away my self-control.
Hope takes you where it wants to go,
every time you open up that door.
Cutthroat while you're praying on the floor,
hope takes away my self-control.
Thought I needed this,
Get my act together,
So close, just to take it all away,
Away
